The Grand Duchess Elizabeth was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England and the elder sister of the Empress Alexandra of Russia. She was known throughout Europe for her high birth, graceful beauty, her modesty and goodness of heart. Though she was not required to, she converted to Holy Orthodoxy after she married the Grand Duke Sergius. After his assassination in 1905 she withdrew from public life and took monastic vows and founded the Convent of Sts. Mary and Martha. She was martyred by the Communist in 1918.
