Ignatius was a student of the Apostle John. He is classed as one of the Apostolic Fathers. He was taken to Rome for execution and along the way he wrote many epistles. He asked that his followers not try to rescue him. He truly wanted martyrdom. He debated with the Emperor Trajan and defeated him. He was then thrown to the lions.
