Mildred the Abbess-St. Mildred was the daughter of King Merewalh of Mercia and Domne Eafe, a Kentish princess. She was educated at the Convent of Chelles, near Paris, where she was harassed by an unwelcome suitor. She returned to England and became a nun at Minster-in-Thanet, an abbey founded by her mother on land donated by kKng Egbert of Kent. The reason for the donation was the king?s remorse at having murdered his two nephews, Aethelred and Aethelberht. Mildred succeeded her mother as abbess.
